Dr. Vance Ramage, Superintendent of Paducah Independent
Schools, pointed out that School to Work has revitalized our concerns over
work skills as part of the curriculum. We are revisiting the importance
of learning skills that are saleable to industry. English, language arts
and math are important tools for survival in the world of work.
He also stated that while the great American dream may
be a college degree, it is not for everyone and other options are available.
Teachers need to take an interest in their students, show concern for the
welfare of the student. We need to do more counseling that says " all
are valuable to our society not just those that go on to college or
receive U.K. degrees. We need to encourage more vocational counseling, vocational
programs. Some of those programs offer the opportunity for making more money
such as the plumbing or electrical fields."
