Advising note for
students planning to transfer to a public university in Kentucky
Transfer frameworks – the second step in the establishment
of a seamless education system in Kentucky – are in place.
This option in Kentucky’s postsecondary education system
helps those students who have definite career goals begin their
education at a community college, then transfer to any public
university in the state – with the guarantee that ALL
credits (taken in compliance with a framework) will transfer
toward their program.
Transfer frameworks provide a wonderful opportunity for students.
All a student must do is plan ahead and follow the instructions
in the Transfer Framework Guidebook to receive the benefits
of this guarantee.
A 60-credit hour framework has been designed by a partnership
of the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), the public
universities, and the KCTCS community colleges for over 180
different bachelor’s degree programs (majors) offered
in the state. The transfer framework option is an extension
of the General Education Transfer Policy which was introduced
in January 1996.
The General Education
Transfer Policy allows a student the option of enrolling
in a community college without a major – or with no clear
idea as to an eventual career choice – and still having
the general education credits accepted when the student transfers
to a university. Following the guidelines of this policy, a
student may successfully transfer up to 60 hours of college
credit to any public university in the state without deciding
on a major.
The guarantee of the ability to transfer credits under the General
Education Transfer Policy is the same as for the transfer frameworks,
and the student must follow the guidelines established in the
Policy. The transfer frameworks extend the General Education
Policy by identifying 12 hours of coursework in a major. Information
about specific frameworks may be obtained from a career counselor
or by going to the CPE Web site:
http://www.cpe.state.ky.us/going2/going2_transfer_planning.asp.
