A student may earn course credit by requesting a special examination STEP (Special Technical Education Proficiency). The STEP exam measures mastery of course content and may be taken in lieu of the course. STEP exams may include both written and skill performance and are developed and scored by the instructor. The student must request and take the STEP exam prior to the last day to officially enroll in a class.

STEP request forms are available in the Registrar’s office in the Anderson Technical Building. A fee is charged for the exam - $20 non-refundable charge for each written exam and $40 non-refundable charge for each practical assessment.

A student must earn a score of 70% or higher to receive a passing grade. The “P” grade will apply toward the requirements of the program, but will not be calculated in the student’s grade point average. A student may only take a STEP once for a particular course and a STEP will not be administered if a course has already been taken.
