West Kentucky Community & Technical College named Karen Hlinka as the 2008 Teacher of the Year. Hlinka, a Benton resident, was selected as the student body’s favorite teacher, among 14 faculty members nominated by the Student Senate.
“I’m very flattered and very overwhelmed,” said a surprised Hlinka. “It’s an honor to be chosen by all of the students, that’s what we’re here for.”
Hlinka is a professor of biology and serves as the Dean of the Science and Math Division. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Murray State University in 1981 and received a master’s degree in physiology from the University of Illinois in 1984.
Hlinka began teaching at Paducah Community College in 1988 as an adjunct instructor in the science division. Since then, she has taught General Biology, Human Ecology, and Anatomoy & Physiology for the college. Before teaching at WKCTC, Hlinka was employed at Buffalo High School as an instructor and Fitzsimmons Surgical Supply, Inc. as a program administrator.
She currently serves as a KCTCS Senator-at-Large, KCTCS Biology Curriculum Workgroup, and has served as Chairperson for various internal college committees. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Four Rivers Pony Club.

Other nominees were: Rhonda Darnell, nursing instructor; Andrew Halford, professional and organizational development coordinator; Pat Holler, associate professor in developmental reading; Stephen Holt, cosmetology instructor; Paul Housholder, associate professor of welding; Stephanie Milliken, dean of T & I division; Tiffinee Morgan, professor of accounting; Tammy Potter, dean of business & computer related technologies; Sally Roof, associate professor of nursing assistant; Kimberly Russell, English instructor; Deborah Swain, assistant professor of surgical technology; Jason Taylor, assistant professor of mathematics; and Corey Wadlington, developmental math instructor.
