Fulton resident Michael Pate didn't want to shake hands with the woman who is helping him fulfill his dream of getting an education in culinary arts.

The 2007 recipient of the Yaffe Family Scholarship, Pate just had to give Caroline Yaffe and her sister, Marcia Nemer, both hugs following a scholarship reception at West Kentucky Community & Technical College August 31.  "They're just so nice. (The Yaffe  Scholarship) is very important to me. It helps me pay for school," said the 19-year-old Pate, the son of Marda and Larry Pate of Fulton.  Marcia Nemer was representing the Marshall E. Nemer Endowment Scholarship Fund named in honor of her late husband.

Joe Framptom, CEO of Paducah Bank, talks with Amanda Seay of Graves, the recipient of the Jack Paxton Memorial Scholarship.  Framptom represented the Paducah Bank Scholarship Fund and the Jack Paxton Memorial Scholarship Fund during a scholarship reception at WKCTC Friday.

WKCTC  awarded more than $227,000 in new scholarships to more than 180 students for the 2007 – 2008 academic year.  Friday's reception at the College Bistro allowed scholarship donors the opportunity to meet their student recipients.

In addition to the new scholarships offered, WKCTC will renew selected scholarships of 34 students in the amount of $51,000.

Paducah Junior College, Inc., the Foundation of WKCTC, funds the majority of student scholarships through endowed scholarship accounts and annual fundraising event proceeds.  Additional scholarship dollars are provided by local businesses and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.  Scholarships are awarded yearly to WKCTC students and students of the University of Kentucky College of Engineering extended campus at WKCTC.
