Like many college students, Katie Evens’ life has been a balance between attending classes and working.
An assistant coach for her high school basketball team, Evens said she’s learned that perseverance, teamwork and character are the key factors in athletic success, but they are also important to success in life.
Evens, 20, along with fellow student Tony Cain will be the featured speakers at the 2008 graduation ceremony Friday, May 9 at West Kentucky Community & Technical College and will also be recognized during a honors ceremony before graduation. Cain, who was born deaf and has limited speech, will be accompanied by fellow student Linda Seed, an honors recipient, who used Communication Access Realtime Translation technology to interpret for Cain during the semester. Evens and Cain, both of Paducah, will also represent WKCTC as members of the 2008 KCTCS All Academic Team.
More than 80 students will be recognized during the honors ceremony, which begins at 5 p.m. at Paducah Tilghman High School’s gymnasium with the 2008 graduation ceremony following at 7 p.m. It will be the first year WKCTC’s honors and graduation ceremony will be held at Paducah Tilghman High School.
