More than 200 area community leaders and business officials greeted Governor Steve Beshear at West Kentucky Community & Technical College January 28 during a stop in Paducah.
The Governor discussed his first two months in office, as well as concerns about the budget and the state of the Commonwealth. He congratulated WKCTC President Barbara Veazey on the accomplishments of the college.
"What an asset you've got here. Not everybody has something like this," the Govenor told the standing room only crowd in Crounse Hall. "This asset will not only help us educate our people and train our people, but it will partner with the economic part of this city, this county and this community, just as Murray State University will do."
Beshear said many of the jobs of the 21st century are not jobs that individuals are used to seeing. "They're going to be changing. They're going to require different skills and different talents. And our educational institutions are going to play a vital role the whole community and technical college system is absolutely vital to that."
Individuals coming out of high school are not likely to have the skills to find good paying jobs without additional education, Beshear said, adding that the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, which includes WKCTC, was the key.
"(KCTCS) is one of the most important parts of our whole educational system, because it will be able to produce folks with the kinds of skills and training that they're going to need to move ahead and to get the kind of 21st century jobs that we want to create."
