The Adult Education Department at West Kentucky Community
and Technical College recently held it’s first ever
GED (General Education Development) Graduation Ceremony.
This year, 75 students completed their GED’s, compared
to last year’s 35. More than 20 students took part
in the ceremony.
“We started offering classes and individual instruction
for GED students in January 2007, and I believe that has
contributed to the increase in the number of GED graduates
this year,” said Jackie Hodges, Director of Adult
Education.
Courses that are offered thru the Skills Enhancement Center,
located in the Anderson Technical Building and Workplace
Skills Center, located in Kentucky Oaks Mall are designed
to assist students in obtaining a GED and Adult Basic Education.
“We continually contact students getting close to
GED scores and make sure they are aware of all services
that we offer to help prepare them for the GED test,”
said Hodges.
Hodges also hopes to offer two GED graduations per year
beginning next year.
Services that are provided by the Adult Education program
are GED instruction, Adult Basic Education (ABE), English
as a Second Language instruction, Corrections Education
instruction at the McCracken County Jail and the Paducah
Community Center, instruction at the Workplace Skills Center,
preparation for taking the COMPASS exam, and testing with
the Official Practice Test and TABE (Test of Adult Basic
Education).
The Adult Education Program is grant funded through the
Kentucky Adult Education/Council on Postsecondary Education.
This program serves individuals 16 years or older who have
officially withdrawn from public school, needs to obtain
a GED, or test at 11.9 or below on the TABE.
