The Adult Education Department at West Kentucky Community and Technical College recently held it’s second ever GED (General Education Development) Graduation Ceremony.
From July 1, 2007 to December 30, 2007, 47 students completed their GED requirements. Approximately 22 students participated in the graduation ceremony.
“This is an exciting night for us. It’s great to see our students being rewarded for their efforts,” said Betty Myrick, Adult Education Director.
Courses that are offered through the Skills Enhancement Center, located in the Anderson Technical Building and Workplace Skills Center, located in Kentucky Oaks Mall are designed to assist students in obtaining a GED and Adult Basic Education.
“The GED is an important option for people who want to better their situations. It is important for students to get their GED because without that accomplishment, better jobs and higher education aren’t available,” said Betty Myrick, Adult Education Director.
The Adult Education Center can help students achieve their dreams. Enrolling is easy, and there are no tuition costs associated with the program.
“I should’ve done this a long time ago. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I wanted to make my daughter proud,” said GED graduate Dana Ballard, 35 of Paducah.
“Our courses help students get ready for the GED exam, and our instructors can show students what opportunities await them after they receive their GED certificate. Our free courses are customized programs based on the students needs. Students can start at any time during the year, experienced instructors and tutors are ready to assist students throughout the program,” said Myrick.
Services that are provided by the Adult Education program are GED instruction, Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language instruction, Corrections Education instruction at the McCracken County Jail and the Halfway House, workforce instruction at the Workplace Skills Center, preparation for taking the COMPASS exam, and testing with the Official Practice Test and TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education).
The Adult Education Program is grant funded through the Kentucky Adult Education/Council on Postsecondary Education. This program serves individuals 16 years or older who have officially withdrawn from public school, needs to obtain a GED, or test at 11.9 or below on the TABE.
The next GED graduation ceremony will be July 10, 2008.
