Angela Whitis

Angela Whitis was selected as the WKCTC Student Affairs Student of the Month for April. Angela is a student ambassador who has been a key supporter for numerous events and activities, both on and off campus. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and currently enrolled in the dental hygiene program. Positive, outgoing, energetic, hard working, dedicated, and unselfish – just a few of the comments Angela's nominators had to say about her.

Angela is 34 years old and lives in Boaz, Kentucky with her husband of 19 years and her 18 year-old son.  She had her son at 15 years old and quit high school before her junior year. She cried everyday as she watched the bus go by her house. “I want people to know that if you find yourself in that situation, don’t give up.”

When she cleaned out her closet, she saw her husband’s high school cap and gown and wished she had one of her own. “I had something to prove, it was just something I knew I had to do for myself.”

“ I knew that school was important.” She earned her GED in 1996, but knew she wasn’t going to stop there. She would eventually graduate from college and have her own cap and gown. But had to help support her family and worked as a cashier for five years and a dental hygiene assistant for 12 years.

She started at WKCTC part-time in Fall 2008, taking two night classes at time. She enrolled as full-time student in Summer 2011. “I loved my job as a dental hygiene assistant, but it just wasn’t enough. I wanted to do more and get my degree as a dental hygienist.”

Her family is very supportive of her going to college. Wants to set a good example for her son. “He’s known what I’ve wanted to do for a long time. So seeing me serious about my goals and working to obtain a degree, let’s my son know he can do it too. It’s harder to go to college when you’re older, but not impossible at any age.”

She didn’t think she could afford to go to college. Found out she could make payments on tuition. “If you don’t quality for financial aid, there are payment plans and loans. You have to get it out of your mind that there is no way you can do it.”

She raves about with WKCTC. “I am hard to impress, but WKCTC has done it.” WKCTC has caring and compassionate faculty. “I have not met one instructor that is not passionate about teaching….actually not just about teaching, but also about life. They are open to suggestions and will go the extra mile to help students succeed.”

“I had never stepped foot in a college, so I was anxious when I came to WKCTC. But I have never been treated like an inconvenience. Everyone is extremely helpful and friendly and made me feel comfortable from the minute I walked through the door.”
