Writing Tutoring Policies
What Writing Lab Tutors can
do for you:
- help you learn how to proofread or copy edit your writing.
- work with you on one piece of writing per session.
- work with you for 45 minutes per session.
- work with you once per day.
- help you with different drafts of a piece of writing over
multiple sessions.
What Writing Lab Tutors can
not do for you:
- help you with take-home essay exams, unless you have written
permission from your instructor.
- help you with writing that has legal or financial implications
or is related to an appeal of a university decision.
- help you with non-coursework.
A Note on Proofreading
Tutors will not proofread a student's paper.
Proofreading is when tutors simply read and mark up student
work without any interaction, and is not helpful since it does
not give the student an opportunity to learn and be confident
enough to revise and edit his/her own work. Tutors will, however,
review students' writing with them, addressing the strengths
and weaknesses of the writing and enabling them to effectively
edit their own work in the future.
